TV Advert Evaluation

 Section 1

For this project we had to re-brand a Unilever product and come up with a synopsis for a new advert to promote the re-branded product. I chose to work on PG Tips and I tried to re brand it so that younger generations would start drinking more tea, as not many people in the younger generations do. We then had to present our presentation to a small group of people. After this we all sat down together in a group of four and chose the best one to build on. We chose Maia's idea of re-branding Magnum ice creams to young adults, as it's mostly only young children and adults/parents who eat them. We chose Maia's idea as it appealed to all of us and it seemed to be the most interesting one out of our group. After this we then had to make an advert aimed at teenagers to suit our brief. We chose the young adult audience as there appeared to be a gap in the market that we thought we could fill my using teenagers in our advert to try and reach out to them.

 Section 2

We asked a few friends in our class to give us feedback on our advert after showing it to them. Our results are shown in our questionnaire. Most students were able to make out straight away what the video was advertising and who the target audience were, although they didn't find it to be an effective way of advertising Magnums.
I believe that our advert was appropriate to our audience as we only used our target group (teenagers) in our advert. I think we managed to get our main message across of trying to get young adults into eating Magnums more through the situation we created in the advert. I think our pre-production work made more sense and our initial idea was very clever, however when it came to filming and putting it all together, we were faced with a few challenges that made it difficult to create a piece to the standard that we were hoping for. Most of the people in our questionnaire said that the advert caught their attention and that they felt slightly more inclined than before to go out and buy some Magnums. We used a few different filming techniques when creating our advert, including some close-up and wide angle shots, as well as over the shoulder shots and panning. The lighting was unfortunately quite bad as we were mostly using natural lighting because of the time of day we chose to film, it was very unpredictable and there are consequently some continuity errors in our final piece because of this. I think our finished product would sell quite well to our target audience. Although we could have made the message we were trying to put across in the advert clearer, we could have also tried to include some more advertising techniques like using a slogan to catch peoples attention. We were trying to send a message to our audience that shows how Magnums can brighten up dull moments and bring a bit of fun to a boring situation, I think this was shown quite well in our advert through the storyline and acting. Overall I feel like our advert could have been better, we still managed to get our message across to some of the audience, although it could have looked more professional. Our advert complies with regulations from the ASA/BCAP code, as we do not encourage excessive consumption of the food, we didn't make any false nutritional claims and we also did not encourage swapping out healthier food for ice cream.

 Section 3

I think that our final advert was quite different from our original intentions, as it was a lot harder to film and get our message across than we thought. We managed to get our pre-production work done rather quickly, as we had a strong idea of what we wanted to do, however it was a lot harder and took us a lot longer to actually create our ideas. We received feedback from our tutor after we finished our first draft of our advert and he gave us some feedback of things we could improve. So we decided to re-shoot some scenes and also record some new ones, this then made our final product look a lot better than our original draft.
I'm quite satisfied with our final advert, however there were a lot of things that could have been improved. If we were to re-do the whole advert again, I would definitely take more time on working out a very clear way to portray our message and also take more care when filming as well as trying to use more advertising and filming techniques.
We all shared out the work load equally between our group of four. I was in charge of writing up the initial idea from all of our previous work on TV adverts, I then also created the risk assessments and filmed the advert. We then all took part in editing the footage.
