The Pre Production Process

Assignment 1 Evaluation

 For this assignment we had to create a short 90 second film to enter in the DepicT ‘Can You Do It In 90 Seconds?’ contest. We were put into groups and then we had to decide on a topic for a short film, after that we had to start with the pre-production work which included storyboarding, listing the different shots, risk assessments, talent release forms and production schedules. After completing most of the pre-production work we had to start filming. As most of us did not want to have big parts in the film we asked friends to take part and we did all the filming and directing, although we did all have a small part near the end.
 I think overall that our film wasn’t the best and it could have been better, although what we managed to produce in the end wasn’t completely terrible. We could have made it better if we spent more time working on the shot list, storyboard and production schedule so that we had a better idea of what we needed to shoot and when, as we struggled with recording certain scenes and had to make small changes to our pre-production work at the end to make it all tie together. I think that we filmed some scenes quite well, including the main parts of the two death scenes, we made sure that the identity of the killer was kept a secret till the end with careful camera angles and cutting scenes at the right moments.

 This is our final short film for the DepicT 'Can You Do It In 90 Seconds?' contest.

DepicT Past Short Film Entries

 Here are some of the previous years short film entries that I enjoyed and am inspired by:

1. Perfect Houseguest - By Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata

 A house is visited by a clean, organised, well-mannered guest.

 In this short film a small mouse is seen tidying up around someones house, they clean things up and set a picture frams straight on a wall in very creative ways. I really like the mix of animation and live action in this short film, the story is also quite comical and cute and I love the simplicity of it. They used tracking shots to follow the mouse's movements.

2. The Door In The Wall - By David Lilley and Stephen Gray

 Deep in the beautiful woods a little girl happens across a mysterious wall, but all is not as it seems in this enchanting short.

 In this video a little girl has found a large wall in the middle of a forest, she then hears a voice from the other side and is told to find a door because another girl is trapped, she then goes through the door and it shuts and locks behind her, leaving her in the same situation, the story then loops round to the beginning again. I really like the concept of this film and how the story is on a continuous loop which adds some mystery to it, they use eye-line matches, match on action and panning shots.

3. Finishing Touch - By Sebastian Cowan

 A housemaid gets creative when she finds two sleeping guests who have trashed their hotel room.

 In this film a housemaid in a hotel is seen entering a messy room with the two male guests still asleep in the bed, she decides to get some payback for the mess they have made by moving them into what they will find as an embarrassing position before leaving the room untouched. They use lots of zooming in this film to only focus on certain parts at a time and to not reveal the full picture till the end, they also use match on action as you see the woman changing their positions but don't see their final pose until the end, they also use eye-line matches.
